Grooming Techniques for Traditional House Pets

Pets such as dogs, cats and rabbits have thick coats of fur that need to be groomed. While your pet might do some self-grooming, he or she might not be able to get out all of the dirt or tangles. Self-grooming can also lead to hairballs in your pet's digestive tract. These tips will help you to groom your pet at home.

Brushing Your Pet

According to WebMD, the best time to groom your cat or dog is when he or she is relaxed. While most pets are good about grooming themselves, those with long hair and pets that are in their senior years will need some regular help from you. At first, limit your brushing sessions to 5 to 10 minutes at a time, once per day. Start with your pet's belly and legs, using short and gentle strokes. Then move on to your pet's tail and back. Reward your pet with a treat when you are finished brushing.

Checking Your Dog for Insect Bites

While you are grooming your dog or outdoor cat, this is a good time to check for fleas and tick bites. You might need to use a magnifying glass or a lamp to see your pet’s skin if your pet has a thick coat of fur. If you discover any bites or live bugs, you may need to take your pet to the vet for care and preventive medicine. It is also a good idea to get pest control services for your home because fleas can bite pets and people as well. Professionals, like those at Midwest Pest Control, offer pest control in Broken Arrow for pesky home invaders.  After all, no one wants their pets or family to be affected by pests.

Pet Haircuts and Nail Trims

Most pets do not like to have their nails clipped. Get them used to the sensation by touching each toe once per day. Use pet clippers. If your pet is upset, only clip one or two nails at a time. To trim a long haired pet, use clippers. Have someone hold your pet on top of a non-slip mat. According to Love My Pet, clipping your dog's or cat's fur about every 6 to 8 weeks is an ideal schedule. If you live in a place with cold winters, skip the winter haircuts.

By brushing your pet, checking his or her skin for insect bites and giving your pet a haircut at home, you will stay on top of your pet's health. The time spent grooming your pet can also be a great bonding experience. At-home grooming also helps you to save money and time.
