Give a Needy Dog a Reason to Be Thankful

This Thanksgiving, we definitely showed Momo how thankful we are to have her in our lives. Unfortunately there are millions of dogs that are not as lucky. We know that every dog can’t be adopted over the holiday season but we wanted to highlight some of the great things people can do to help out needy dogs this Thanksgiving.

Angels for Animals

Momo is an inside dog, we just wouldn’t have it any other way. Unfortunately for some pets, they just don’t have the same privileges. For those that spend their lives as “backyard dogs”, PETA is working to provide them a shelter to keep them protected from the elements. By becoming a PETA “Angels for Animals” sponsor, you are helping build and provide study, straw-filled doghouses to needy dogs whose guardians won’t relinquish them or let them inside. Thanksgiving dinner for the dogs

The great folks at River Oaks Pet Resort in Houston have been cooking up Thanksgiving turkeys for the last two years as a special treat for the dogs staying at their resorts - and have expanded it to include the pets at the local shelter,Citizens for Animal Protection, as well. When asked about the kind gesture, co-owner Joy Lee said, "When you see the loving care that our clients give their pet companions each day, it breaks your heart to know that thousands of wonderful shelter pets won’t enjoy that same happiness this Thanksgiving. We wanted to do something special for the pets at CAP and give them a holiday treat too.”

Become a foster parent Many shelters are cold, scary and overcrowded. If you aren’t ready to bring a dog into your home permanently, consider fostering a dog waiting for their forever home. Some shelters even have programs to foster an animal just during the holiday season. What better gift than to give a needy dog a loving home, if even just for a few days. Contact your local shelter or check out www.petfinder.com to find a dog that would be more than grateful to be fostered.

Volunteer your time

If bringing a dog into your home isn’t an option, volunteer some of your time to a local shelter or sanctuary. Lots of shelters are understaffed and overworked – they are always looking for people to help out. Many dogs rarely have any human contact, let alone get to go for long walks. Just being able to run and stretch their legs is something they will definitely appreciate. To find a shelter close to you, check out www. animalshelter.og.

Even though Thanksgiving is officially over, these are all great ways to help give a needy dog something to be thankful for.

We hope everyone had a great holiday!
