6 Indoor Games and Puzzles to Play With Your Dog

By Elsie Weisskoff 42 days ago at 12:00 am

Being stuck indoors is never fun. Whether it’s a rainy day or you’re under quarantine, you may be at a loss for how to entertain yourself and your pup. It can be easy to stay curled up on the couch and neglect exercise altogether. Unfortunately this has a negative impact on sleep and overall health.

To keep you and your pup entertained, we have a list of indoor games and puzzles. These activities are all apartment-friendly. We’ve included DIY puzzles, active indoor games and training challenges for you to try.

If you don’t have the space to run around inside, you create puzzles. For example, treat puzzles like the Wobble Ball can stimulate your pup’s brain and mentally exercise them. If you do have some room, try out the active indoor games that will get you and your dog’s heart pumping. Lastly, if you’re working on training, you may consider creating an agility course and practice skills. Read through these indoor games for dogs by Apartment Guide to see which ones you can try out today!

1. Muffin tray tennis ball puzzle

Materials needed:

  • Muffin tray
  • Four tennis balls
  • Treats

Start by having your dog sit. Place a few treats in different cups of the muffin tray as they wait patiently. Instruct them to find the treats.

Now that they are familiar with the game, repeat step one but this time put tennis balls over the treats. Instruct your dog to find the treats. See if they can sniff them out and figure out how to move the tennis balls out of the way to retrieve them.

As your dog gets better at sniffing out the treats, set up some decoy tennis balls with no treats under them.

2. DIY Treat Dispenser Puzzle

Materials needed:

  • Water bottle
  • Drill
  • Dog treats

Wash the bottle so that it’s clean and remove any labels. Drill a hole in the side of the bottle. The size of the hole will depend on the size of your treats. The hole should be a little smaller than your treats so they don’t easily fall out.

Put the treats in the bottle and screw on the top. Give the treat dispenser to your dog and see how long it takes them to solve the puzzle.

Be sure to keep an eye on your pup when they are playing with this toy. If they chew additional holes in the plastic it can become dangerous.

3. Stairway Race

Get your energy out by making a flight of stairs into a race track. This works best with carpeted stairs because the dog can get traction without scratching your hardwood floor. Begin at the bottom of the stairs. Say “On your marks, get set, go!” Once you start running up the stairs, your pup will be eager to follow.

4. Hide and Seek

Play a game of hide and seek with you dog. Have them sit and tell them to stay. Go hide somewhere in the house with a treat. When you’re hidden, tell them to come. When they find you, reward them with the treat. This fun indoor game can be played for hours.

5. Practice Classic Skills

Take this time indoors to practice some skills. This is a good challenge for any dog, no matter the breed or age. Learning skills can improve your dog’s reliability off-leash and general listening skills.

Some skills to learn include:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Come
  • Paw-shake
  • Hug
  • Bow
  • Leash
  • Spin
  • Roll-over
  • Play dead

6. Create an Agility Course

Many dog parents choose to teach their pets agility. Learning agility is a great skill to have and can strengthen your bond with your dog. You can easily set up a makeshift course in your home to practice common agility skills. Practice weaving, jumping up, jumping through, going under and crawling from the comfort of your living room.
