Many of us have today off to observe Veterans Day; while you're enjoying the holiday, remember to take the time to show the members of our military that they are appreciated.

To thank our current and past service members, many national restaurant chains are providing free or discounted meals with a proof of service (ID, photo, in uniform, etc.)  (Note: Not all franchise locations participate in their national chain's Veterans Day programs -- be sure contact your nearest establishment to confirm.) Here are just a few of the restaurants participating:

Besides the great companies providing discounts and freebies for America's Finest, here are a few ways that you can show your appreciation:

  • Random acts of kindness. Have you ever gone up to pay for your coffee, only to find out that the person in front of you already took care of it? It is such a simple and thoughful way to make someone's day. Is there a service member dining at the same restaurant or coffee shop as you? Send over a drink or dessert on you.
  • Send a care package. One of our P.L.A.Y. team members had a spouse serve overseas and he especially loved receiving packages with some comforts from home. Often times, servicemembers overseas don't have access to a lot of the same daily conveniences they are accustomed to.  Favorite items include: hand sanitizer, chapstick, gum, beef jerkey, drink mixes, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, cookies or even some canned foods like tuna salad. Don't forget our four legged service members either, dog lovers can include some treats or even small toys. To find out more informotion on what and where to send care packages, visit OurMilitary.com
  • Donate to a Vet in Need. It's a sad truth, but many vets have a hard time acclimating back into civilian life and struggle with joblessness, financial burdens, as well as mental and physical disabilities. There are numerous organizations that are supporting our vets in need, you can help by donating. To learn more, here's a great list from the Huffington Post.

Knowing that there are hundreds Military Working Dogs currently on active duty around the world, we wanted to help make their service a little more comfortable by sending a set of our Warm Bellies Chill Pads in care packages through Operation Military K9 Car,  Chapter 1 of the United States War Dogs Associations. If you want to help provide a little extra comfort for these amazing service dogs, visit Operation Military K9 Care for more info.

At P.L.A.Y., we sincerely thank and appreciate all of the service men, women and canines for their bravery, courage and sacrifices.

It's obvious that we love dogs. We want to help dogs in anyway we can and that's why we've recently donated a few of our items to charities across the country. From helping homeless animals in Austin, to contributing to Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or donating raffle items for animal rescue and cancer research in California- we know that every little bit helps.

Austin Pet's Alive! (APA) is a non-profit organization run almost exclusively by it's volunteers. With a mission to provide resources, education and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals - we were more than happy to donate one of our products for their Sweet Barks adoption event.

It was a fun-filled and wonderful day for pets, people, and Austin Pets Alive! Almost $1500 was raised, as well as $600 worth of donated food, toys and treats.

The best part:  six animals went home that day - to new lives, with additional adoptions still pending!   Congratulations on a successful event APA!

The Weston Whirlwinds have been participating in North American Flyball Association flyball tournaments since 2000. For those of you who don't know, Flyball is a fast-paced relay race for pups. It's unique because it is truly a team sport - four dogs and their handlers have to work together in order for their team to be successful. Most recently, their event in February hosted 56 teams at the Central Massachusetts Expo Center in Fitchburg, MA. (Thats over 200 dogs!)

A portion of the proceeds from the event were donated to Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (FSMA). The charity (chosen because a member's son is affected by the terrible disease) raises money to help find a cure for the disease in addition to supporting families dealing with the illness everyday. We are proud to have been a sponsor for such an important cause.

Next up? The Weston Whirlwinds are hosting a Mardi Gras Madness event at the end of March. To find out more about the sport or learn how to get your dog involved, check out the North American Flyball Associations website.

This April, the Delta Australian Shepard Fanciers and the Peninsula Australian Shepard Association will be hosting their Spring Fling event. The event includes two Agility Trials, four Conformation Shows, two Obedience Trials and two Rally Trials - all for Australian Shepards! Last year the event had 139 dogs compete in the conformation show alone! For the event this year, 100 percent of the money raised from their raffle will be split equally between animal rescue and cancer research. With such a great cause, we were happy to donate one of our agility tunnels for the event.

We contributed to these events because they are not only fun for animals and their humans, but they work to make a difference as well. We'll be sure to share more photos as we get them!
