National Train Your Dog Month Training Tip #7: Don't Coddle Your Pup! When your dog is frightened by a person, place, or situation, don't coddle her. By saying, "don't worry, it's okay, there, there." you're basically giving your dog the impression that being scared is okay. Instead, encourage your pup to explore.

Example: Your puppy is scared to go down the stairs. Instead of coddling and picking her up. Encourage her, and then praise when she makes that first step. That will give her the confidence to know it's okay!
