4 Ways to Keep Your Feline Friend Active and Healthy

It is no secret that cats don't mind being by themselves as long as they are fed and have a warm place to sleep. However, they also like to chase, stalk and pounce on anything from a toy mouse to your foot moving under the covers. What are some ways that you can promote an active and healthy lifestyle for your feline friend?

Set Aside Time Each Day for Play

The best part about playing with a cat is that they like to chase almost anything that moves or makes noise. Therefore, you don't have to spend a lot of money on toys to keep them interested during a play session. A laser pointer, crumpled up piece of paper or a ball of yarn are all inexpensive items that can keep your cat occupied and engaged on a daily basis.

Don't Overdo It with the Treats

There is nothing wrong with giving your cat a treat when he or she is being good or as a reward for engaging in play. When given sparingly, they won't do much to spoil your cat's appetite or lead to significant weight gain. However, you should make sure not to give them any of your food no matter how much they may like it. Doing so could lead to begging, lack of interest in your cat's own food as well as problems digesting the food.

Take Your Cat to the Vet Regularly

Just like humans should go to the dentist and the doctor every six months, a cat needs to be seen by a vet every six months or so. Professionals, like those at Evergreen Veterinary Clinic, know how important regular check-ups are for cats. Once a year, your cat should have a dental exam as problems with teeth or gums are often the first sign of health issues elsewhere within the animal.

Get a Second Cat

If you aren't able to play or socialize with your cat, it could easily get bored by itself. Getting a second cat may result in the two felines playing with each other or otherwise keeping each other company when you are not around. If you do get a second cat, make sure to introduce them to each other gradually.

Cats can make loyal and loving pets when treated properly. Therefore, make it a point to play with your cat on a regular basis and keep it on a healthy diet. Along with regular medical and dental care, taking these steps can help your pet live a long and healthy life.
