Time for an Autumn RV Trip with Your Dog
Autumn is the perfect time to take a vacation, and of course, leaving your pooch at home or in a kennel is out the question. They are a member of the family and will enjoy time away just as much as you. With crowds now thinning out, you'll have more elbow room – and so will your pet. Here are some ideas for dog-friendly destinations this autumn.
The East Coast
National parks are always wonderful places to spend vacations. Not all national parks are dog-friendly but on the East Coast you will find Maine's Acadia National Park will cater well to the furry family members. Your dog can join you in hiking on virtually all the hiking trails and carriage roads. Be sure to stop by the Bass Head Harbor Lighthouse to catch some breathtaking ocean views.
Virginia is lovely this time of year, but you may want to plan a trip during mid- to late October to be there for peak foliage. Shenandoah National Park offers the opportunity to see the Shenandoah Valley in all its beauty, even if the trees are not yet changing – and let your doggie enjoy it as well. There is no restriction as to where your pet can go in the park, so go hiking with your dog right by your side. Drive from one end of Skyline Drive to the other to get the full impact of this park.
Salisbury Beach in Massachusetts is a place to head if you want to get in some last minute beach activity. You can fish or boat if the water has become too cold for swimming. There are a few pet restrictions but nothing that will stop you and your pet from having a great time. Camping is available until the middle of October.
Midwest Destinations with Your Dog
A wonderful Midwest vacation destination with your pet is Cañon City, Colorado. The Royal View at Royal Gorge Campground is a pet-friendly spot for camping. The things to do in this region are abundant. Here are some of the things you can enjoy:
- Ride the Royal Gorge Route Railroad
- Visit the Museum of Colorado Prisons
- Take some photos at Royal Gorge Bridge and Park
- Experience the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey
Albuquerque, New Mexico is a vacation spot where you will find all kinds of adventures. The desert air is dry and healthy, and the sun shines happily down as you embark on some intriguing explorations. Shop for Native American jewelry, take a hot air balloon ride, play a game of golf. It's all up to you and what your preferences are. And there is a wide array of campgrounds that take pets. Here are some:
- Enchanted Trails Camping Resort
- High Desert RV Park
- Coronado Village
- Albuquerque Central KOA
West Coast Vacation Spots
Naturally, Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is a premier destination, whether or not you have been there before. Did you know this national park is one of the most pet-friendly parks around? It's true. You can hike the rim with your dog on either the South Rim or the North Rim paths. There is nothing like enjoying the spectacular scenery with your whole family, including the four-legged member.
Pets will need to be on a leash but can accompany you on the paved trails and roads at Yosemite National Park. This amazing California Park can take your breath away with its towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. Rent a bike, place your small pet in a seat on the back and take off exploring. The fresh air is refreshing and enlivening.
Perhaps this is a great time to take in the beautiful Southern California city of San Diego. The coastline is not so crowded right now and you'll find you can let your dog off-leash at two beaches - Coronado Beach and Ocean Beach. You will want to visit all the attractions while here, such as Sea World and the fascinating San Diego Zoo.
A vacation with your pet in any part of this wonderful country is a time to shed those workaday blues and get back on track. Taking your pet with you makes special memories for a grand time away from home, even if for a short trip.
